Wandering with the Arizona Cardinals

Cards Logo

Today we’ll look at the Arizona Cardinals schedule for the year to determine if there are any interesting “road” trips. Keep in mind that “road” might not only mean away – you can easily create a “staycation” with the Cardinals at home. And since our weather in the desert in the fall is the best in the country, why not hang out here and spend your hard-earned cash. Save the airfare (and increased TSA Fees) and put it towards a tailgate of epic proportions!

Let’s get started…

Week of 9/11/14 – Monday Night Madness
The Cards open the season at home against the Chargers on Monday night, Sept 8th! Unfortunately, there aren’t any other events happening in the valley that weekend.

Week of 9/18/14 – Possible Trip!
During Week 2 of the NFL schedule, the Cardinals travel to New Jersey to take on the Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, September 14th. Just down the road, on Saturday night, the Nittany Lions take on one of the newcomers to the Big Ten, Rutgers.

This will be the second time in the short seasons the Lions will take on a team called the Knights. Kickoff is scheduled for 8pm in what will most likely be a dominate Penn State crowd in Rutgers’ High Point Stadium.

For good measure, you can throw in a Nats vs Mets game at the relatively new Citi Field in Queens on Friday night.

Week of 9/25/14 – NorCal invasion
For those Northern California fans, Week 3 might be a great time to take a trip to the desert. The Cal Bears are in Tuscon on Saturday, September 20th and the division rival 9ers are in Glendale on Sunday afternoon.

Week of 10/2/14 – Denver Options
After a bye week, the Cards head to Denver for a Sunday afternoon game with the Broncos on Oct 5th. You can have your pick of three college games on Saturday with either Oregon State at Colorado, Tulsa at Colorado State or a Military Matchup of Navy at Air Force in Colorado Springs.

Week of 10/9/14 – Civic battles
The Cards are back home against the team from Washington. Mark it down – plan on demonstrators trying to disrupt this game. The Coyotes will also be home against the NHL Champions, the LA Kings on Saturday night. If hockey’s not your thing, a trip to the Old Pueblo to see USC take on the Cats on Saturday will be worth the trip.

Week of 10/16/14 – Matt McGloin?
Can Scranton native Matt McGloin defy all odds and start again for the Silver & Black?  A road trip takes the Cards to Oakland to battle the Raiders on Sunday, Oct 12th.  You can couple this with a battle of California teams on Saturday with UCLA visiting the Cal Bears.

Week of 10/23/14 – Sibling visit!
The Cards are back home on Sunday, Oct 26th, against the Eagles and the Coyotes will be playing next door on Saturday night against the Panthers. I’ll have family in town so chances are pretty good that I’ll be attending the Eagles game!  But with Penn State playing at Ohio State, my Saturday night will be in front of the TV.  Later in the week, the Suns will host the Lakers on Wednesday.

Week of 10/30/14 – The Cowboys still suck
Back on the road to former arch rival, Dallas, the Cards will play on Sunday afternoon. Although NASCAR is in town, they’ll being overlapping, so no opportunity to catch the race. And the only close college game is Saturday with Kansas at Baylor down the road in Waco.  It might be worth the trip just to check out the new stadium in Waco. If you’re interested, stay over Monday and catch the Celts vs Mavs game.

Week of 11/6/14 – Sports Mecca in Phoenix Metro
The goods news is, this week you’ll have your choice of marquis events. The bad news is, you’ll have to make a choice. NASCAR will be town on Sunday along with the division rival Rams. Both will overlap. On Saturday, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will be in town to play ASU and the Islanders will play the Coyotes that evening. Kickoff for the ASU game hasn’t been scheduled, but my money’s on a late afternoon or early evening start. If the NBA is your thing, the Kings and Warriors are in town Friday and Sunday respectively.

Week of 11/13/14 – Cut the grass this weekend
The Detroit Lions visit Glendale on Sunday and the Chris Petersen-led Washington Huskies play in Tucson.  Start the weekend early on Friday with the Bobcats playing downtown against the Suns.

Week of 11/20/14 – Worth a trip to the northwest
The Cards head to Seattle for another Sunday afternoon matchup and the Washington Huskies play host to Oregon State.

Week of 11/27/14 – Watch on TV
The Atlanta Falcons welcome the Cards and a snoozer of a game is available on Saturday with Texas State playing at Georgia State in the same dome. Even with the Pelicans and Bobcats in town Friday and Saturday, it’s just not worth it.

Week of 12/4/14 – Will the Cards be in the hunt?
The Cards play host the KC Chiefs on Sunday and the Bruins visit the Coyotes Saturday night. The LeBron-less Heat come to town on Tuesday the 9th.

Week of 12/11/14 – Thursday Night Madness
Downtown St. Louis will be hopping. The Cards play at the Rams and the Islanders play the Blues at the same time on this set of Thursday night matchups.

Week of 12/18/14 – Primetime in the Desert
The only game in town is the Seahawks vs the Cards in Glendale for this Sunday night Matchup.

Week of 12/25/14 – Start of Bowl Season
The Cards finishing the season at the new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara against the 9ers on Sunday, Dec 28th. Two days later, on Tue, Dec 30th, the new site hosts the San Francisco Bowl – a matchup between the Pac-12 and Big Ten. Again, oddly enough, the NHL has the Sharks hosting the Canucks at the same time as the new Bowl. Good luck with that one.

There you have it Cards fans. If you’re as much of a Cards fan as I am a Bills fan, you can plot your year to see your team along with some other exciting options to make your trip worthwhile!

Which do you like the best?
