Is it too early to start thinking about College Football? As my Fiesta Bowl ticket renewal package came in the mail, I starting thinking more about the game I love. I’ve already mapped out Penn State’s schedule. It’s going to be difficult for me to get to a game this year – even with my daughter moving to idyllic State College as an incoming freshman. Only time will tell.
With opening weekend down to double-digit days away, I thought I’d take a crack at the best roadtrips for Week 1. Sure, everyone is writing up the must-see matchups for opening weekend, but how can you parlay it into more than just a single game? Even though the NFL season starts the following week, there’s plenty of options for a great sports viewing weekend as the college football season kicks off. Here’s my take…
The best game of Week 1 for me is Alabama vs Wisconsin in the Jerrydome. The primtetime matchup will take place Saturday, September 5. Fly in the day before and catch Baylor visiting SMU on Friday night. What a great way to start the season!
The best Wandering Weekend on my list is this one! Texas is visiting Notre Dame on Saturday night. The Diamondbacks have a 3-game weekend series against the Cubs, so you have your choice of options. With a 1:30 start on Saturday, you could even make it a double-header day, but it would be cutting it close. Also in the area, Stanford is visiting Northwestern, on Saturday as well, but chances are, it would be hard pull that one off. My recommendation? Fly into Chicago, take the 2 hour ride to see Michigan State take on Western Michigan in Kalamazoo on Friday night. Then catch the Irish on Saturday, then back to see the DBacks on Sunday.
For you ASU fans, the Sun Devils will head to Texas to play A&M in Houston on Saturday in the Advocare Texas Kickoff Game. While both Rice and Houston have home games on Saturday, I’d recommend spending the day tailgating at NRG Stadium instead. Fly in Friday to catch the Twins vs Astros on Friday night to make it a Wandering Weekend.
While not a blockbuster on paper, the TCU vs Minnesota matchup on Thursday night could be a great trip for those Minnesotans itching to get back home. The White Sox visit the Twins in a rare day game earlier in the day. You can have a great start to an early weekend!
There are a couple of other games that are interesting in Week 1, but there’s nothing yet scheduled around them to make them appealing. Things can improve once the NBA and NHL schedules are announced. These games include:
- Michigan at Utah
- North Carolina vs South Carolina in Charlotte
- BYU at Nebraska
- Washington at Boise State
- Auburn vs Louisville in Atlanta
Cap off your Wandering Weekend on your couch Monday night, September 7th. While Ohio State visiting Virginia Tech to get revenge from last year’s lone blemish on the Buckeye’s National Championship season sounds appealing, there’s nothing else close to the remote college town of Blacksburg. Sitting home relaxing with a beverage will be the perfect ending to Week 1.
