Wandering with the Hawkeyes – 2019

Are you planning to see the Hawkeyes this year? Why not combine events to make the most of your travel and see if you can catch some NFL action on Sunday or an MLB game Friday night? If you’re lucky, you can make it a trifecta like we did when we caught the Bulls vs Suns Friday night, Hawkeyes vs Penn State on Saturday then Bears vs Titans on Sunday. I wrote about it in my “Lions and Bulls and Bears Oh My!” post.

Here’s a look at the Hawkeyes 2019 schedule and surrounding events to make the most of your weekend.

2019 Iowa Football Schedule

Aug. 31Miami (Ohio) Football ScheduleMiami (Ohio) RedHawks

The Hawks kickoff their season at home against the other Hawks – the RedHawks. If you’re flying into Chicago, check out the Cubs vs Brewers either Friday or Sunday afternoon.  A day game at Wrigley is an awesome experience!
Sep. 7Rutgers Football ScheduleRutgers Scarlet Knights

Rutgers comes to Iowa City to open the B1G season for the Hawkeyes. If you can swing it, head into Chicago early for the NFL season opener on Thursday night with the Packers vs the Bears. Stick around in Chicago on the South Side for the Angels vs White Sox before heading to Iowa City. And if you really want to top off the weekend, go back to Chicago for the final game of the Angels/Sox series on Sunday afternoon.

Sep. 14Iowa State Football Scheduleat Iowa State Cyclones

The in-state rivalry is worth the trip alone, but if you want to take in some baseball, check out the Cubs vs the Pirates on Friday or Sunday

Sep. 21 OFF

Sep. 28Middle Tennessee Football ScheduleMiddle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Start your weekend with the Sox vs the Tigers on Friday night before a late-season OOC game against Middle TN.  This game will serve as a tune-up for the B1G game next week. Party all night before making the trip for the late Sunday afternoon game of the Vikings vs the Bears. If you care, catch the late-season MLB playoff push with the Tigers vs Sox on Sunday afternoon.

Oct. 5Michigan Football Scheduleat Michigan Wolverines

With MLB now in the post-season, hope for a Tigers playoff run – otherwise, it’s just the Hawks vs the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Oct. 12Penn State Football SchedulePenn State Nittany Lions

The last two years, this game has come down to the wire with Penn State holding the edge. It should be an electric atmosphere once again. We’ll have to check back to see if the Cubs or Sox are in the playoffs and if the Bulls or Blackhawks are in town.

Oct. 19Purdue Football SchedulePurdue Boilermakers

The Homecoming Weekend features the Purdue Boilermakers. Over in Chicago, the Bears host the Saints in a late afternoon kickoff.

Oct. 26Northwestern Football Scheduleat Northwestern Wildcats

Late October in the Windy City at Northwestern and you’re treated to the Bears hosting the Chargers on Sunday.  Not a bad weekend, but bring a jacket.
Nov. 2 OFF

Nov. 9Wisconsin Football Scheduleat Wisconsin Badgers

Why not take a tour of Wisconsin in November? Camp Randall is definitely on my bucket list and throw in Lambeau Field on Sunday for the Packers vs Panthers and you’ve got yourself quite a weekend. If you’d rather stay closer to Chicago, catch the Bears at home against the Lions.

Nov. 16Minnesota Football ScheduleMinnesota Golden Gophers

Mid-November can be pretty chilly in Iowa City.  With nothing else happening around the area, it might be best to take this one in from your couch.

Nov. 23Illinois Football ScheduleIllinois Fighting Illini

The Hawks celebrate Senior Day against the Illini and over in Chicago, the Bears host the Giants, featuring sophomore phenom, Saquon Barkley.

Nov. 29Nebraska Football Scheduleat Nebraska Cornhuskers

Celebrate Thanksgiving in Nebraska, then catch the Friday season-ending game against the Huskers. Some fans may want to take in the Iowa State vs K-State game in Manhattan on Saturday, but if you can’t stomach that thought, consider Baylor vs Kansas as an alternative.  On Sunday, the Raiders visit the Chiefs in an AFC West battle.

Dec. 7Big Ten Football ScheduleBig Ten ChampionshipLucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN

The B1G Championship is within reach this year.  With a little help, the Hawkeyes may find themselves in their second appearance in the game with a shot at the Rose Bowl.

Where will you be wandering this year?

Stop wondering. Start wandering!
